As part of a model project, the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund realized the new building in the Pfeifertälchen in Kaiserslautern until August 2016.
The building's architecture takes into account the special needs of people with dementia with regard to their special urge to move. The single-storey building is defined by the arrangement of the monolithic exposed concrete cubes, which contain the private care rooms and sanitary facilities. The flowing space in between shapes the lounge, common areas, family café and allows the residents to develop freely.
The light-flooded rooms increase the quality of life of the residents. The outdoor space design is to tie in with the "green care" concept and serve to promote the mental and physical health of the residents in the "dementia garden".
The project was awarded the BDA Architecture Prize Rhineland-Palatinate 2018.
