Irregular eyes – The light grey cube with a large number of identical openings is the first building block for the extension of the University of Applied Sciences Konstanz. In the future, five more buildings will be grouped around a common square. Located directly on the Seerhein, the institute building marks the start of the expansion of the Konstanz University of Applied Sciences.
The four-storey building combines seminar rooms and offices in a compact volume. On the entrance side and on the water side, two oversized openings form a sheltered entrance and a two-storey loggia with a view of the Rhine.
The strong façade made of visible concrete with a uniform window format appears both austere and playful. From a distance, it resembles a cube with irregular eyes. As you get closer, the concreting joints and the imprints of the formwork joints become apparent on the smooth concrete walls. The surfaces of the cube are irregularly perforated through the window holes.
The robust beauty of the visible concrete is also evident in the large openings of the entrance and the lake loggia. Here you can see and feel the constructive dimension of the load-bearing concrete outer shell. The open loggias are a discreet reference to the inner use of the building and serve to loosen up and illuminate the inner circulation.
