The new office and laboratory building of TPMA GmbH is part of the "Medical Technology Campus" (MMT Campus) at the Wohlgelegen site in the immediate vicinity of the historic University of Mannheim.
The first construction phase marks the start of two further planned buildings with a focus on medical technology for young founders, which is to shape the quarter. The U-shaped floor plan typology with its central access forms the infrastructure, workspaces and laboratories for highly specialised research by the region's start-ups on four floors. It allows the division into flexible rental units, which can always be easily modified and changed as required. Parking spaces are offered for tenants in the basement. The clear cubature of the brick building is emphasised by the flush windows of the perforated façade on the upper floors and by the plasticity of the windows, which are only set back on the ground floor. The individual storeys are horizontally structured and combined by circumferential metal bands in the same colour scheme as the windows at the height of the window sills.
The choice of stone mixture is a tribute to the typical colorful traditional Mannheim brick buildings. For this purpose, this stone was specially produced in a small brick factory. Structurally, the building on the ground floor was designed with a classic pre-bricked, rear-ventilated façade in a wild runner band. On the first floor, there is a crack in the shell due to a change in façade construction. From there on - not visible from the outside - an ETICS system was carried out with the slips cut in the factory.
