More Over
Multi-layer construction methods with functional separation of the vegetation load-bearing, filter and drainage layers have become established as the standard structure for extensive greening. The tasks of the vegetation base layer are performed by a minerally composed substrate with low organic contents. The substrate must be able to store water and nutrients and provide the plants with sufficient root space. Water that cannot be absorbed by the plants, so-called excess water, should be safely drained. For this purpose, a drainage layer is installed, which can also consist of a combination of water storage and drainage layer. Between the substrate and the drainage layer, a filter fleece ensures the retention of fines from the substrate and thus ensures the long-term function of the drainage.
The basis weights of the superstructures are essentially determined by the substrate. Per cm of layer thickness, the weight of the commercially available mineral substrates is approx. 10 to 13 kg/m² in a water-saturated state.
For a sedum greening, at least 6 cm of substrate is recommended. Including vegetation, filter and drainage layer, a basis weight of approx. 70 to 100 kg/m² is achieved. Sedum herb greening with at least 8 cm root space starts at about 90 to 130 kg/m². With a special light green roof system for roof structures with low load-bearing capacity, the total weight is less than 70 kg/m². However, the vegetation then only has a limited root space available.
Extensive greening is low-maintenance, but not maintenance-free. The regular removal of unwanted foreign growth and fertilization if necessary are the most important care measures. Watering is not necessary, at least with established extensive greening. Only new plants may require emergency irrigation during dry periods. Until the desired vegetation has developed nationwide after one or two growing seasons, a little more care may be required. After that, two maintenance sessions a year are sufficient, ideally in early spring and autumn.
