In 1932, the brothers Alfons and Karl Knauf secured the mining rights of a gypsum deposit in the municipality of Schengen on the Upper Moselle. One year later, the first own gypsum plant was built in Perl on the Moselle. The foundation stone for the Knauf company, which is still family-owned today, was laid.
Today, Knauf is one of the leading manufacturers of building materials and building systems in Europe and far beyond. Today, Knauf is represented worldwide on all five continents in more than 86 countries at over 220 locations with production facilities and sales organizations. Knauf Werke produces modern drywall systems, plasters and accessories, thermal insulation composite systems, paints, flowing screeds and floor systems, machines and tools for the application of these products as well as insulation materials.
In 2016, the Knauf Group generated annual sales of EUR 6.5 billion worldwide with around 27,400 employees. The Knauf Group is managed by the managing partners Manfred Grundke and Alexander Knauf. Nikolaus Knauf and Baldwin Knauf moved to the shareholders' committee in 2008 and are responsible there in annual rotation as chairman and deputy chairman.
Today, the name Knauf is still synonymous with gypsum, a raw material with fascinating properties, in many countries. Gypsum and gypsum-related products and insulation materials are manufactured and sold in almost all Western and Eastern European countries. The companies of the Knauf Group also operate successfully in the USA (insulation materials), South America and Asia, Africa and Australia.
