The "Buggi" is located in the Freiburg-Weingarten district, at Bugginger Strasse 52. Until before construction began, there was a single-storey supermarket from the 1960s on the property, and the public "Else-Liefmann-Platz" adjoins the new building to the south.
The former supermarket will now be replaced by an 8-storey building with an extensive basement. On the ground floor, a new and significantly expanded supermarket replaces the old sales areas. A 3-class kindergarten is arranged on the first floor, and the accessible and partially green roof area of the supermarket can be optimally used as an outdoor play area. On the other floors, 30 apartments, most of which are barrier-free and planned to be eligible for funding, of different sizes were built.
The building was built entirely in timber from the 1st floor onwards, including the stairwells and the elevator shaft. The majority of the load-bearing structures were manufactured using economical panel construction, the outer walls were clad with wooden formwork. The timber construction was assembled on the construction site with a high degree of prefabrication (including façade structures, windows, sun protection, sheeting, etc.), the construction of one floor, including the ceilings, took about 1 week.
Due to the complexity and innovative timber construction, the planning and approval of this project turned out to be an intensive coordination process between the licensing authorities, urban planning, the fire brigade and the planning team. Due to the height of the building, which is located just below the high-rise boundary, the completed building concept represents a unique and forward-looking contribution to building with wood.
