The preparatory work for this project publication was carried out as part of the building construction theory in the seminar FAÇADE 4.0 at the TUK through a student thesis by Rebecca Buchwald.
The private clinic is located in a park in the immediate vicinity of the Neckar and the old town.
The architecture of the building refers to defining themes such as the surrounding buildings of the old hospital as well as the historical landmarks of Heidelberg.
While the complex façades in local sandstone blend sensitively into the surroundings, the approximately 30 patient rooms and suites meet the highest contemporary hotel standards. The strong overarching structure of the façade integrates the heterogeneous requirements of the different areas of use in the building, but also loggias and opaque surfaces. The central hall provides access to the various areas such as prevention, specialist practices, nursing wards or the outpatient surgery area.
The Ethianum is heated, ventilated and cooled with geothermal energy via component temperature control and decentralised façade devices, making it the first "Green+ Hospital" in Germany in 2012. In 2011, the building also received the "International Healthcare Application Award" from AIT."
