The preparatory work for this project publication was carried out as part of the building construction theory in the seminar FAÇADE 4.0 at the TUK through a student thesis by Gil Miguel Ferreira Cruz.
In the vicinity of the Kulturpark Berg in the east of Stuttgart lies the site of the Parkstraße daycare center. The two-storey new building of the four-group daycare centre fits into the green corridor with historic trees on the site of the previous building. The position, building dimensions, construction and materiality of the daycare center are derived from the special parameters of the property: The local building statutes define the building depth of twelve meters. Position and orientation result from the construction line and the terrain sloping from west to east. The foundation on an existing underground bunker system makes lightweight construction made of wood without alternative.
The main entrance is on the north side and is easy to read in the façade. The foyer, which also serves as a parents' meeting place, is plugged through from north to south and opens onto the garden side. From here, the multi-purpose room is accessed as well as the group areas in the south and the ancillary rooms in the north via a corridor. All common rooms on the upper floor are preceded by a loggia. Two external staircases, which stand out vividly from the building, lead directly from the upper floor to the garden with free play areas.
The clear division of the building into a group and a side room zone can be seen in the design of the façades and the roof shape. Skylights in the roof along the corridor support the impression and allow good lighting and ventilation of the building. Due to the internal structure of the building, sanitary and ventilation installations can be limited to the adjoining room span. This allows greater room heights to be achieved in the common rooms and save ceiling suspensions.
The daycare center is designed as a structural timber construction with a high degree of prefabrication. The lower weight of the timber construction allows the building to be erected on the air-raid shelter below. The rising construction of the daycare center consists of flat components made of wood. The outer walls take advantage of all the advantages of a timber frame construction with rear-ventilated façade cladding. The red colour of the wooden formwork makes the building visible in contrast to the green of the park and refers to the red shutters of the neighbouring Raitelsberg estate from 1928.
