The Haus der Wirtschaft in Nuremberg, a historic city block that has been used by merchants for centuries, is undergoing a comprehensive general renovation and partial expansion. The refurbishment aims to transform the insufficiently connected existing buildings into a modern, more communicative ensemble. Targeted demolition and new buildings will create flexible office space that can be developed efficiently.
The central courtyard is transformed by a glass roof into a light-flooded atrium, which serves as a reception and event room for up to 400 people. The main entrance will be relocated, providing space for retail space and a restaurant. The new office wings are optimally designed for flexible use and feature modern, acoustically effective materials.
The façade of the new buildings picks up on characteristic elements of the old town and combines historical and contemporary design. The thermal renovation of the old buildings and the compactness of the new buildings contribute to the energy efficiency of the ensemble. Despite the challenges posed by monument preservation, the project meets today's requirements for functionality and sustainability.
