The building, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was extensively renovated and supplemented by a new building to become a museum with a permanent exhibition and special exhibition rooms.
The basis for the renovation of the building was the historically documented renovations of 1868 by Friedrich August Ritter and 1894 by Friedrich Wanderer.
By relocating the main entrance and all the necessary functional rooms to the new building, it was possible to protect and preserve the existing building fabric as far as possible.
The new building adjoining the existing building speaks a self-confident and contemporary language with its clear cubature and construction, but is nevertheless subordinate to the existing building and its surroundings through the materiality of the façade and the differentiation of individual parts of the building in terms of dimension and height.
In the combination of the new and old buildings, a significant tour of the museum rooms was developed, which leads visitors through the various themes of the permanent exhibition "Luther's Last Way".
