For the school campus in Überlingen (Lake Constance), a master plan was developed in the area of the secondary school and the grammar school. Its central component is the construction of a new sports centre, consisting of a three-field sports hall, an equipment gym, a ball sports hall and outdoor sports fields. During the day, the hall is reserved for physical education at the schools, in the evenings and on weekends it is also available to the Überlingen sports clubs.
The sports hall presents itself as an atmospheric, elegant solitaire. The façade made of white expanded metal appears filigree and envelops almost the entire building, except for the largely glazed ground floor. The entrances are accentuated by undercuts. The distinctively folded hall roof, which grows out of the cube as a jagged wooden construction, structures the building and mediates to the neighboring, smaller-scale residential buildings. In this way, the new building blends into the roofscape with Lake Constance and the Alps as a backdrop, is at the same time present in the cityscape and offers a high identification and recognition value.
The building is accessed from the north, east and west. The prominent staircase in the opposite direction inside also underlines the idea of an open house that takes up references to the public space and the adjacent schools. In order to accommodate five sports halls of different sizes in a clearly defined structure and to minimise the footprint, the uses were stacked: The plinth, designed as a transparent joint, houses the foyer, the three-field sports hall and the longitudinally arranged grandstand. From here, the competition hall is clearly visible and there are exciting views to the outside to the surrounding schools and sports fields. On the upper floor, the ball sports hall and the equipment gym with ancillary rooms here, a continuous ribbon of windows provides sufficient daylight.
The design motifs in the interior of the building are also dominated by white expanded metal and exposed concrete as well as generous glazing, creating light-flooded rooms with an inviting and quiet atmosphere as well as a high quality of stay. The sports centre is tailored to the needs of the athletes and offers optimal conditions for competitions and sporting events. As a contemporary sports facility, it enhances the sports landscape of the city of Überlingen.
