The German School in Madrid, founded in 1896, is one of the oldest and, with 1,800 students, also one of the largest German schools abroad and is an important place of cultural exchange in the city.

At the new location in the north of Madrid, separate buildings were assigned to the various uses, which are combined into an ensemble via the perforated roof structure of the foyer courtyards. The three main buildings for kindergarten, primary school and grammar school each enclose an introverted patio that opens onto the landscape of the adjacent Sierra with its snow-capped mountains.

The geometrized landscape of stairs, ramps and offsets follows the topography of the site and creates differentiated spatial situations with the lively play of light and shadow of the perforated roofs and facades.
