The existing residential building from the 1950s with a gable roof will be renovated and expanded by a new volume to create appropriate space requirements for the young family. Since the existing floor level is raised by one metre, the built-in wooden box will also be raised. As a result, the extension is also well protected against the flooding of the adjacent stream.
In terms of design, the design plays with the intersection of the two elements "old and new". Inside, "old and new" overlap and unite spatially and functionally. A sequence of rooms with increasing room heights ends in the two-storey gallery of the living area, which spatially connects it with the play corridor of the upper floor in the existing house.
With seemingly only one window element per façade side, the wooden box appears to be a very strong volume. Inside, however, the windows open up a surprise: if they appear from the outside as a double-leaf element, they are in fact a combination of two single-leaf windows with different rooms behind them, creating interesting views and sufficient natural light.
The extension was implemented using a sustainable construction method consisting of timber frame elements and solid wood ceilings. A curtain-walled, rear-ventilated façade made of acetylated MDF boards without further surface treatment was screwed onto a substructure at the back and hung, which is not visible. The renewed windows in the existing building and the flush-mounted windows of the extension visually link "old and new".
After the conversion, the residents enter the new house via a massive staircase on the street side. On the back terrace, you can now relax on the new steps under the walnut tree.
