Monolithic construction

mo·no·li·thish

ancient Greek: "one-stone"

In common parlance and architecture, the term "monolithic" is used to refer to constructions that "appear to consist of" one piece and differ from those that are assembled from different individual parts & follow "tectonic" principles of joining.

These are single-shell, ideally even "single-layer", continuous constructions that can be made of different materials. Concrete constructions (e.g. ☛ insulating concrete) are usually meant, as the building material can be cast from one piece.

On the other hand, single-shell but "multi-layered" constructions are constructions made of ☛ perforated bricks (with plaster layers) or solid timber constructions.
