Façade waterproofing

In contrast to window waterproofing and ☛ window connection, façade waterproofing includes light façade constructions:

  • Rear-ventilated façade
  • Double façade Unitised
  • façade
  • Post-transom façade
  • Alternating façade
  • Glass façade

Veneerable film systems, adhesives and sealants are mainly used as façade sealants.

Basics of sealing films and tapes

Various technologies have established themselves in the field of window and façade sealing. Sealing films have their fixed place in waterproofing, as they are the most universal and safest form of waterproofing and meet the building physics requirements.

Depending on the installation situation, different properties of foils have prevailed.

  • Textile: so-called fleece-laminated films with capillary water-absorbing effect for subsequent plaster adhesion – mainly in the area of perforated windows (solid facades)
  • Plastic: so-called veneerable films with a smooth surface for "shadow gaps" in the curtain façade.

In addition to the quality, the structural location and thus the diffusion behaviour of the film systems is decisive:

  • inside = warm side of the building > films must be "water vapour diffusion retardant" or "vapour-tight".
  • outside = cold side of the building > foils must be "open to water vapour diffusion".

The planned construction and the resulting necessary foil routing dictate the adhesive finish of the foils to be used.

Façade waterproofing - example mullion-transom façade

In the case of mullion-transom façade systems, the waterproofing between the façade element and the building structure (shell construction) must be carefully planned and executed.

In this case, the mullion-transom elements must be connected to the shell all around so that the inner airtightness level in the sense of three-level sealing is guaranteed.

The upper and lower connection of the façade elements between the individual storeys is carried out by means of a constraint-free bonding from the façade element to the building with a vapour-diffusion-tight and airtight film. The lateral bonding to the walls or columns is analogous to this. (see Picture A > 1)

The panel is then insulated with an insulating wedge and protected by bonding it with a vapour-permeable weather protection film. (see picture A > 2)

The façade waterproofing - example masonry

The foil is attached to the frame and the masonry (shell) and can be clamped, glued or mechanically fixed. Especially in masonry, the use of adhesives is crucial and almost essential. The film can have a single self-adhesive strip, can be self-adhesive over the entire surface or can be mounted with a wet adhesive system.

If the substrate is uneven and not ideally prepared, processing with pastes is strongly recommended. Paste processing is also the most universal and safest assembly solution, as it is the best way to forgive and compensate for imponderables in daily construction. In addition, a wet adhesive system is much more robust against subsequent tensile and shear loads when cured.
