Rafters or rafters are the girders running from the eaves to the ridge that support the roof cladding and roofing.
In the overhead position, the rafters are usually arranged at right angles to the ridge.
Rafters are designed either as inclined single-span girders or inclined multi-span girders (with or without cantilever arms), the lower attachment to the support is called a rafter holder or rafter base.
Rafters are used in the pure ☛ rafter roof, where they transmit the forces directly into the roof/ceiling beams.
When used in ☛ the purlin roof, the loads are transferred to the purlins running perpendicular to the rafters.
Especially in the southern German-speaking area , the rafters of a purlin roof are also referred to as "Rofen" or, more rarely, " Rafen".
