While studying architecture at ETH Zurich in 1972–77, Peter Märkli met the architect Rudolf Olgiati as well as the sculptor Hans Josephsohn, whose sculptures adorn many of his later buildings. In 1978, Märkli founded his own office in Zurich. Märkli became known for the design of the La Congiunta Museum in Giornico for Josephsohn, among other things. Märkli realised various residential buildings within Switzerland in his characteristic style, which often combines sculpturally broken or reshaped, but actually austere buildings with an earthy colour and material aesthetic typical of him. His better-known new buildings include an office building for the Novartis Campus in Basel and the Im Birch school complex in Zurich-Oerlikon. For the PWG Foundation, he built a much-noticed new building at Zurich's bakery facility. In 2005, the building received the award for good buildings from the city of Zurich.
