Exhaust system, multiple occupancy

Many chimney systems are approved for multiple occupancy. This means that several fireplaces on the same or on different floors may be connected and operated at the same time on one draught or on an exhaust pipe.

As a rule, up to three fireplaces can be connected to one chimney. Approval for mixed occupancy and overpressure operation is rare. Open fireplaces may not be connected to a multi-occupied chimney.

For the multiple occupancy of a chimney, the following requirements must be met in accordance with §7 para. 4 MFeuV:

  • Guarantee of the discharge of exhaust gases by appropriate dimensioning and design of the system in every operating condition.
  • Exhaust gas transmission into rooms whose fireplace is not currently in operation must be excluded.
  • Fire transmission between the installation rooms must be prevented by automatic barrier devices or in any other way.
  • The common flue pipe must be made of non-combustible building materials.

In accordance with DIN V 18160-1, when connecting air-dependent fireplaces , there should not be more than 6.5 m between the introduction of the lowest and the uppermost connecting piece. A mixed occupancy is possible if the connectors for solid and liquid fuels at the flue gas nozzle of the fireplace lead at least one metre vertically upwards.

If a fireplace with solid fuels is connected to the mixed occupancy, all components of the chimney system, including the connectors of the other fireplaces, must be designed for solid fuels.
