Levels with a fall height of 1.00m or more (stairs, balconies, ...) must be provided with fall protection in accordance with the state building ordinance. This also applies to sequences of at least three levels, where fixed handrails are provided. The railings not only protect against people and objects falling, they also absorb loads (e.g. by leaning against and holding people).
Railings can be made of different materials and can be designed in different ways, e.g.:
For a fall height of up to 12.00m, a railing height of at least 0.90m is prescribed. Measurements are taken from the leading edge of the step perpendicular upwards. All open levels higher than 12.00m must be secured with a railing of at least 1.10m. For special cases such as workplaces, industrial plants and power plants, the Workplace Ordinance specifies a minimum railing height of 1.00 m.
