In the case of external thermal insulation composite systems, a fire barrier is a non-combustible system component from the manufacturer, e.g. made of mineral wool, which is routed horizontally around the building in the same thickness instead of the normally flammable insulation material. Fire bolts may be necessary if a thermal insulation composite system with normally flammable insulation materials must meet the property of "flame retardant".
Fire bars must usually be at least 200 mm high and made of stone fibres with a melting point of at least 1,000°C. When fastening them, special specifications for bonding/anchoring must be observed, as well as other specifications, e.g. the arrangement with a maximum distance of 1 m to adjacent combustible components such as roofs.
