Especially in timber construction or in the renovation of old buildings, waterproof glued wood-based panels, e.g. made of OSB (Oriented Strand Board), are often installed as a load-distributing layer instead of conventional screeds. These can either be the substrate for a covering to be applied (e.g. tiles, parquet, carpet) or serve as a finished walking surface themselves if the characteristic surface of the wood-based panels is to be used as a deliberate design element or if the design plays a subordinate role due to use, e.g. in storage rooms or as a temporary walking surface.
Wood-based panels are also available with a sanded surface, which can still be painted, glazed, waxed or oiled if necessary.
