In the case of superimposed gravel layers with different grain sizes, it must be ensured that no material can be washed out into the lower soil layer with the coarser grain size after compaction. The cavities of the lower (more permeable) soil layer with a larger grain size must therefore be smaller than the smallest grain size of the layer above.
