Multi-layer parquet, formerly also known as "prefabricated parquet", consists of a wear layer of solid wood at least 2.5 mm thick, which is glued to at least one other layer made of wood or wood-based materials (e.g. HDF or MDF). The laying pattern usually only describes the decorative arrangement of the individual glued timbers of the wear layer, as multi-layer parquet usually consists of plank-like wide strips that are assembled using tongue and groove. Usually, multi-layer parquet is laid with a ready-to-use surface. With the exception of the wear layer thickness, the other element dimensions are not standardized.
The wood for the wear layer must be fresh and healthy and must not show any signs of wood rot, insect damage, fungal infestation or mould. The overall impression of an installed floor must give a homogeneous picture. Further specifications regarding the permissibility of e.g. healthy sapwood, knots, shallow cracks, bark ingrowth, lightning cracks, fibre tendencies, resin galls, colour differences and heartwood depending on the type of wood and the respective classification can be found in Tables 1 to 4 of DIN EN 13489. In the case of floating installation (not possible with every product), multi-layer parquet can be removed and taken away without leaving any residue, e.g. in rented rooms.
