Rammed earth wall

Lehm Ton Erde Baukunst GmbH

Description

Rammed earth walls in outdoor areas impress with their lightfastness. After the drying phase, it retains its colourfulness when other materials fade, darken, change colour or even moss. Due to the dryness and moisture-active effect of the clay, microorganisms such as fungal infestation and the like cannot form. The façades do not show any color changes for decades, on the contrary, the luminosity of the surfaces becomes stronger over time. The rammed earth of the walls is not stabilized with additional binder and must be protected against persistent moisture and weather. The crown of the wall and the base must be designed in such a way that moisture penetration from above or below can be ruled out. To protect against erosion, mortar strips are placed on the outer edge of the formwork after every third layer and stamped in at the same time. Stone or brick slabs can also be used as a proven alternative. These prevent excessive washout of the walls due to the water running off too quickly along the façade. The minimal erosion, which occurs mainly on the weather side, is taken into account in terms of construction and design, one speaks of calculated erosion. This emphasizes the naturalness of the material. After the first few years, in which fine parts of the surface have been washed out on the weather side, the feel no longer changes noticeably. The ecological aspect and the conceptual idea of the building created directly from the earth are playing an increasingly important role in decisions for the material.

More Over

Rammed earth walls in the interior have a positive effect on the indoor climate. Their enormous mass attenuates the temperature extremes of the day. In a wooden house, for example, which has to do without a large storage mass due to its construction, the installation of solid walls made of clay is a good idea. In addition, the walls can be equipped with heating or cooling pipes to make them thermally active. The rammed clay walls cap not only the temperature peaks, but also the peaks of the moisture content of the air. The ability to quickly absorb and release moisture from the air creates a pleasant and healthy climate in the interior. In addition to odors, clay also binds pollutants that can be transported through the air. Last but not least, rammed earth is used as a design tool. Its horizontal layering has a calming effect and shows the material in its raw form.

On-site production In

on-site production, it is ideal to use local material, and in some cases also excavated material. Walls are designed monolithically without dilatation joints.

The stripped rammed earth surface can be easily reworked, retouched and artistically processed during the first drying time. Pressed relief-like structures visualize the sensitivity and softness of the once moist clay mass after drying.

Prefabrication - Production

Prefabrication in clay construction is a reaction to today's usual construction processes. Shorter construction times often do not allow for on-site production. Through the further development of prefabrication in rammed earth construction, projects can be realized that would not be feasible through on-site production.

The prefabricated construction method enables production regardless of the weather, can be precisely calculated in terms of schedules and shortens working time on the construction site. The drying phase takes place entirely in the factory. Construction coordination on the construction site is easier and more accurate to plan. This enables optimal integration into industrialized construction processes. Work processes can be optimized and streamlined by modular systems.

On easily accessible construction sites, elements up to 7000kg and large wall thicknesses can be moved with the crane. Despite the industrialized prefabrication, a high degree of individuality can be achieved. Prefabrication allows for optimized detailed work in the workshop. This allows for flexible and variable design. A combination with a timber or concrete skeleton construction method has proven to be very efficient.

Due to the plastic material properties of clay, the joints between the precast clay elements can be easily retouched so that they are no longer visible. As a result, large, cohesive, monolithic-looking walls can also be created in prefabricated construction.
