ZinCo Intensive Green Roof URBAN FARMING

ZinCo GmbH

Description

Vegetable cultivation on the roof

The number of densely populated conurbations is growing. Worldwide, more than half of all people live in cities. Undeveloped areas and greenery are rare here. In Germany, according to the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning and the Federal Environment Agency, 50 percent of settlement and traffic areas are already sealed. About 110 hectares are added every day. More and more agricultural land is being lost as a result. As a compensatory measure, green roofs have now become established in the densely populated regions.

Therefore, it makes sense to use roof areas for the agricultural cultivation of vegetables, fruit and herbs.

The fresher, the tastier!

A kitchen garden on the roof also offers numerous ecological advantages. For example, proximity to the consumer minimizes long transport routes and emissions. However, short transport routes also mean that the goods are available fresher and thus tastier. In addition, the plants filter pollutants from the air and thus contribute to improving the climate in cities.

However

, in order for commercial horticulture to work on the extreme location of roofs, the relevant parameters must be taken into account. ZinCo has therefore developed the "Urban Farming" system structure as a permanently reliable solution. The heart of the body is the drainage element Floradrain® FD 40.

With 20 cm of ZinCo system soil , this structure is suitable for vegetables and fruits such as lettuce, onions, herbs, zucchini, aubergines, pumpkin, cabbage, melons, strawberries. For fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, green beans, raspberries, blackberries, currants and the like, a substrate height of 28 to 40 cm is recommended.

The need for irrigation and fertilization depends on the vegetables to be cultivated and the local climatic conditions. Over-fertilization must be avoided. The special requirements of the roof location (such as wind, statics, water drainage) must be taken into account in the planning.

Safety on the roof

As with all roofs used, precautions for fall protection are necessary. ZinCo offers suitable systems and railing solutions for this purpose, all of which can be installed without roof penetration.

Intensive green roofs – well-kept gardens on used flat roofs

An intensive green roof can be compared to building a garden on a roof. These roofs are usually multifunctional and accessible. Intensive greening requires more weight and a higher system structure. Maintenance must be carried out regularly and depends on the design and the plants chosen. Depending on the thickness of the layer, almost all plants are possible, such as lawns, perennials, shrubs and trees, including other landscaping measures (e.g. ponds, pergolas and terraces).

These diverse forms of use can be implemented permanently and reliably with the ZinCo system structures. In addition, a large number of detailed solutions offer safety in the execution of connections and terminations, transitions and drainage points.

Features

  • Lawns, perennials, shrubs and trees
  • High maintenance Regular
  • watering
  • Structure thickness 15–200 cm
  • Weight 200–3,000 kg/m²

Intensive green roofs offer the entire spectrum of landscape architectural designs. Lawns, perennials, fruit and vegetables, woody plants and trees grow at layer heights of 15–100 cm, often combined with pavements, terraces, play areas or water features. Even driving surfaces, such as on underground car park ceilings, are possible with appropriate statics. Depending on the version, a weight of 150–1300 kg/m² must be taken into account and irrigation and maintenance requirements must be taken into account.
