Vinyl or PVC floor coverings belong to the group of resilient floor coverings and are made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This amorphous thermoplastic is composed of 43% carbon and hydrogen from petroleum products and 57% from the common salt component chlorine. Because the material is actually hard and brittle, it is made soft and malleable by the addition of plasticizers and stabilizers.
"Luxury vinyl" is the term used to describe designer floor coverings. These are usually high-quality, heterogeneous and printed plastic coverings with a PVC underlayer, an overlying carrier layer, an imprint layer and a transparent wear layer.
