A definition can be found in the leaflet on precast concrete elements made of exposed concrete of the Association of German Precast Concrete Construction: The term architectural concrete includes both designs that aim to achieve the most perfect, uniform surface and colour possible, as well as projects in which the naturalness and liveliness of concrete as a building material are permitted and deliberately emphasised. The precast concrete elements made of architectural concrete are designed as a design element of architecture and must be manufactured with special care in terms of surface, colour and shape. Precast architectural concrete elements are mainly used in façade construction and representative interior areas. The general requirements and conditions that are also used for exposed concrete apply to precast architectural concrete elements.
A central component of the manufacturing process in architectural concrete is the processing of the concrete. All processing methods are done by hand. In order to achieve uniform results, especially with large-format prefabricated elements, this activity requires a very good instinct and a lot of experience.
