The Onsernone deposit was discovered and developed in 1956, exactly 60 years ago, by Roberto Pollini. Pollini ran a quarry for Maggiagneis in the village of Riveo in the Maggia Valley, which he had processed in the adjoining factory mainly by hand into products for road, gardening and landscaping. The Onsernone, which is similar in colour and structure to the Maggiagneis, but somewhat lighter and less stratified, occurs on the other side of the mountain, in the Valle Vergeletto, a side valley of the Centovalli. During the first 20 years, the material was mined only in limited quantities, not least because of the poor development at the time, and, like the Maggiagneis, was largely processed by hand. In the meantime, the access roads have been significantly improved, which enables significantly higher transport capacities. Today, there are two quarries in the Valle di Vergelleto, which are located directly next to each other. The larger of the two is also the largest quarry in Switzerland. The onsernone is first dismantled by fuse blasting; then the blocks, which can be up to 500 cubic metres in size, are divided into transportable units by drilling. With the help of huge Caterpillar backhoes, the blocks are finally driven to the transport road, then loaded onto trucks and driven down into the valley.
