According to the model building code, all buildings with a height of 13 m or more (height = top floor above the ground surface in the average) must have an elevator that stops on all floors. For residential buildings, the need for a passenger elevator may also arise in lower buildings, e.g. if barrier-free accessible apartments are arranged on the upper floors. Specifications for this are also contained in DIN 18040-2. Even in upscale residential construction, a passenger elevator is already common on fewer floors.
All minimum dimensions for passenger lifts in residential buildings are regulated in DIN 15306. For lifts in residential buildings, the following also applies: From a load capacity of 320 kg, the lift is suitable for transporting people, from 630 kg for prams and wheelchairs and from 1,000 kg for transporting stretchers and furniture. From a load capacity of 630 kg, a barrier-free version or a version as a fire brigade lift is also possible.
