The battens are the outer part of the substructure of a curtain wall façade construction. The wooden cladding or another type of cladding of a façade is hung or attached to the battens. It is usually made of full-edged softwood, the distance between the slats (batten width) depends on the covering material used.
The wooden battens usually consist of cross-sections measuring 42 x 48mm or 30 x 50mm. However, this depends on the direction of installation and the additional insulation.
The battens are primarily used to create a distance between the façade material and the load-bearing structure for rear ventilation. Reliable rear ventilation requires a cavity of at least 20mm. Openings for rear ventilation must be provided at the lower and upper ends.
Depending on the type of installation of the façade cladding, the substructure is installed horizontally or vertically.
Vertical substructure
With vertical battens, there is usually sufficient rear ventilation and the air can circulate upwards and downwards through the rear ventilation openings. The distance between the individual slats should be a maximum distance of 50cm.
Horizontal substructure
In the case of vertical battens, a counter-batten is required to ensure sufficient rear ventilation. A counter batten is mounted horizontally above the base battens.
