More about steel beams IPE, IPN

Steel beams with parallel flanges are divided into the following

  • profiles: IPE (I-profiles with parallel inner surfaces of the flanges)
  • IPN (I-profiles with inclined inner surfaces of the flanges)
Notes on planning

IPE girders are mainly used as beams, rather than as supports or struts. Since these profiles are rather slim and light, they have a tendency to bend. IPE beams are often used in the construction of multi-storey buildings. These profiles are rarely used for bolted connections due to their inclined inner surfaces of the flanges. They are generally welded. Areas of application are, for example, cross beams in the form of purlins.
