The European standard DIN EN 13501-1 classifies building materials according to their fire behaviour and thus also according to their fulfilment of the corresponding building authority requirements. DIN EN 13501-1 replaces the former German standard DIN 4102-1. For products approved up to and including December 2001, classifications according to DIN 4102-1 are still permissible, but products approved after that date were/will only be classified according to DIN EN 13501-1. A direct assignment of the classes according to DIN EN 13501-1 to the former building material classes according to DIN 4102-1 is not possible due to different test criteria. According to DIN EN 13501-1, the following additional requirements are placed on floor coverings:
Smoke development s (smoke):
s1: Smoke development
low s2: Smoke development medium
Example/ notation: A2fl-s1 = non-combustible, low smoke development
