Window connections are among the most complex trade interfaces. When connecting windows, services are described that are generally referred to as window installation. The window installation consists of the window fastening and the window sealing. From a functional and geometric point of view, window connection is further divided into:
The term "base sill" is also used regionally for the outer window sill. Basically, one speaks of a sill if the outer window sill can be seen as part of the parapet masonry (natural / concrete stone). A window sill made of clinker bricks is referred to as a roll layer.
Other variants are lower window connections of floor-to-ceiling window elements and upper window connections to sun protection systems (roller shutter boxes).
The very large number of variants of window connections is based in particular on various exterior wall constructions (solid and skeleton constructions, single- and multi-shell walls) and on very different window layers. When it comes to the window position, a distinction is first made between installation in the wall reveal and installation in the insulation level. Depending on the position of the window in the reveal, one speaks of externally flush, middle and interior flush connections. Traditionally, windows were installed in masonry walls at the so-called stop (offset in the reveal). Today it is increasingly flush mounted (wall opening smooth throughout).
Window fastening
It must be ensured that all the forces from the window element can be transferred perfectly into the structure without deformation or other damage. On the other hand, the window fastening and the connecting joints must be dimensioned in such a way that no forces are transferred from the building to the window. Depending on the type of construction, window position and materials, a wide range of fastening means are available (direct fastening screws, frame dowels, lugs, claws, chatters, guides, consoles, anchors, frames).
Special planning is required for fastenings of fall-protection window elements, which must be statically verified. Additional requirements for window fastening may arise due to project-related special requests (e.g. burglary protection).
Window sealing Window
sealing is referred to as the so-called three-level sealing, which must be planned in a coordinated manner on all sides of the window. Professional window sealing consists of:

During planning, particular attention must be paid to complete airtightness and thermal bridge minimisation, which are required by law (GEG). Careful planning also requires lower window connections that are located in the area of the building waterproofing (area of DIN 18531 – 18533). Depending on the window position and façade construction, window sealing is sometimes carried out by several trades (e.g. external sealing by façade trade), which requires targeted interface planning and trade coordination.
