Substrate layer (vegetation base layer)

The substrate or vegetation base layer is the actual breeding ground for the plants on green flat roofs. However, vegetation substrates also form the base layer of the green roof.

More about substrate layers

Nowadays, substrate layers usually consist of mineral bulk materials mixed with organic matter. In addition to naturally occurring materials such as lava or pumice, recycled materials such as clay bricks and compost can also be used.

The

growth habit of the green roof depends on the thickness of the substrate layer.

  • With thin layers up to 8cm thick, there will be a growth of sedum species and herbs.
  • If more root space is available, a growth of flower meadows, grasses and herbs is created
