Sheet metal / sheet steel

Sheets are flat products made of metal, which are usually produced using the rolling process. They are offered as a bar and can be made of almost any metal. In traditional crafts, sheet metal was hammered from cast products.

To produce sheet metal, metal is processed into so-called "slabs" immediately after liquid production.

sheets are divided into two categories according to their thickness:

1.) Heavy plate (thickness > 3 mm, according to EN 10029):

Heavy plate with a thickness of more than 3 mm is produced as standard uncoiled sheet goods. These plates are manufactured using the reversing hot rolling process.

2.) Sheet metal (thickness < 3mm):

Sheet metal with a thickness of less than 3mm is either coiled or supplied as strip. These sheets are either hot-rolled or cold-rolled.

In EN 10130 and EN 10346, thin steel sheets are differentiated according to:

  • Quality
  • Basic
  • quality Drawing quality
  • Deep drawing quality
  • Special deep drawing quality

Treatment options are:

  • painting
  • enameling
  • plastic coating
  • nickel plating
  • copper
  • galvanizing
  • tinning

Manufacturing process:

1.) Hot rolling:

1.1.) Reversing process:

This process is mainly used for heavy plates with widths over 2,000 mm and thicknesses over 5 mm.

1.2.) Continuous process (hot wide strip):

This process uses rollers connected in series (5-7). This can produce rolled products of more than 300m in length. These metal strips are then cut to the desired lengths. Alternatively, the strips are coiled. The strips are 500 to 2,000mm wide.

2.) Cold rolling:

Cold rolling usually takes place at room temperature after hot rolling.

Sheets are available in sheets (rectangular sheets in standard dimensions), standard formats and oversized formats.

Panels:

  • Normal sheet: 1,000mm x 2,000mm
  • Center sheet: 1,250mm x 2,500mm
  • Large sheet: 1,500mm x 3,000mm

Standard formats:

  • 2,000mm x 6,000mm
  • 2,000mm x 8,000mm
  • 2,500mm x 6,000mm
  • 2,500mm x 8,000mm
  • 3,000mm x 6,000mm
  • 3,000mm x 8,000mm
  • 3,500mm x 7,000mm
  • 3,500mm x 14,000mm
  • 4,000mm x 12,000mm
  • 4,000mm x 16,000mm

  • 2,000mm x 12,000mm
  • 2,500mm x 12,000mm
  • 3,000mm x 12,000mm

The maximum dimensions today are approx. 4,700mm x 20,000mm
