Properties
The thermal insulation effect of expanded perlites is good and comparable to that of other common insulation materials (λ = 0.042–0.053 W/mK). The material is permeable to diffusion (μ = 2), non-biodegradable and resistant to vermin, water and chemicals. Of particular note is its ability to regulate moisture. Certain perlite grades have good acoustic properties. Expanded perlite is also non-flammable.

Expanded
perlites are supplied as sheets or loose fills (granules).
Expanded
perlite is offered as a light insulation fill for unloaded insulation of cavities (e.g. core insulation for double-shell masonry, full-rafter insulation or insulation of floor ceilings). Resilient insulation fill under wet screed and heavy-duty insulation fill under dry screed are further application examples. Expanded perlite is also often used as a levelling and filling fill between upholstery timbers for the thermal insulation of floors. Expanded perlite can also be used to produce heat-insulating mortars and plasters. Closed-pore expanded perlite is also suitable for diffusion-permeable insulating plasters as interior and exterior insulation.
