Travertine belongs to the limestone family. It is a sedimentary rock of continental origin (freshwater limestone) and consists mainly of calcite, which is why it is one of the monomineral rocks.
Appearance: Light yellow, brown and beige tones to grey and white. Travertine is a solid, layered rock. Typical are the straps when sawing against the bearing. Its structure is pore-rich, fine to coarse-grained.
Properties: Travertine is an easy-to-work limestone, characterized by porosity and voids. As long as it is not filled, it is considered a frost-resistant natural stone, which, however, is not very resistant to weathering and acids. It is basically polishable. In outdoor spaces, a matt patina forms on its surface within a short time.
Use in construction: natural stones for floors, wall coverings and stairs, mainly indoors, but also outdoors (especially as terrace coverings), sculptures and decorative applications.
Examples of travertine varieties: Cannstatter Travertine, Roman Travertine, Langensalza Travertine.
