There are no generally applicable structural rules for the use of interior wall paints in damp rooms. However, manufacturers have restrictive recommendations for the use of their products in this regard. Three areas of application can be distinguished:
- a) Indoor spaces with a largely constant room temperature (approx. 20° C), without short-term or permanent increased humidity, e.g. living rooms, offices, classrooms.
- b) Indoor spaces with temporarily increased humidity, e.g. domestic kitchens and bathrooms, utility rooms, hobby cellars. In areas directly exposed to splashing water (e.g. in showers or above bathtubs/washbasins), additional measures may be necessary (e.g. waterproofing for plasters containing gypsum) or suitability may be excluded in principle (e.g. clay plaster).
- c) Indoor spaces with a room temperature well below 20° C and/or permanently elevated humidity, e.g. commercial kitchens, communal showers, swimming pools, unheated warehouses.
