Multilayer flooring with polymer wear layer

In multilayer floor coverings with a polymer wear layer, the wear layer consists of vinyl, PET or polypropylene, for example. The surface can imitate a wide variety of wood, metal or natural stone types, for example. Thanks to digital printing techniques and in conjunction with three-dimensional embossing, the surface can hardly be distinguished visually and haptically from the natural model. In some cases, the surfaces can also be individually designed according to customer requirements.

With regard to the core layer (carrier layer) used, there are the following distinctions:

  • Core layer made of wood-based material, especially HDF,
  • polymeric middle layer, e.g. made of vinyl or PUR,
  • mineral middle layer, e.g. gypsum fiber material,

In the case of products with a wear layer of vinyl, this is sometimes also referred to as LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile). Some products have an insulating layer laminated on the underside, e.g. made of pressed cork, to optimise impact noise reduction and increase walking comfort. In some cases, a second insulation layer (damping layer) made of pressed cork is also placed above the middle layer for further improvement. The advantage of floor coverings without a laminated insulation layer, on the other hand, lies in the extremely flat installation height (from 2 mm), which makes it possible to lay on the existing topfloor, e.g. tiled floor, especially in renovation projects. Some products are also suitable for damp rooms. Multilayer floor coverings are regulated by DIN EN 16511.
