Plexiglass is a common trade name for acrylic glass. Other names include Perspex, Acrylite, Repsol and Resartglas. The chemical name is polymethyl metarcylate and is abbreviated to PMMA.
PMMA is a transparent plastic and an organic compound. Because of its lower density, it is only about half as heavy as inorganic glasses.
The modulus of elasticity is significantly lower than that of conventional glass, only about 5%. In addition, the material is sensitive to scratches.
