Escape route dimensions according to workplace law

Minimum dimensions for escape routes in workplaces are regulated in the Workplace Ordinance or in the Technical Rules for Workplaces ASR A2.3 (Escape Routes and Emergency Exits, Escape and Rescue Plan). For barrier-free workplaces, there are sometimes different requirements in accordance with ASR V3a.2 (Barrier-free design of workplaces):

*In an escape direction where there are no encounters with other persons with disabilities

**

In an escape direction in which encounters with other persons with disabilities take place

Applies not only to doors but also to restrictions in places due to fixtures and fittings

The minimum width of corridors may be reduced

at doors in accordance with the table values

Unless specified, preceding minimum widths of the escape routes may not be further restricted, e.g. by fixtures/installations in corridors. In stairwells, they are considered a clear minimum between the handrails.

ASR 2.3 specifies 2.0 m as the minimum clear height for escape routes, and a minimum clear height of 1.95 m applies in the area of doors. Note: there may be deviating minimum dimensions for barrier-free use in accordance with DIN 18040 (clear height of circulation areas: ≥ 2.20 m, clear clearance height in the door area: ≥ 2.05 m).

If, as expected, stairwells serve as safe areas for the short-term intermediate stay of persons with disabilities who, for example, use a walking aid or a wheelchair, in the event of danger, the stairwells must be designed accordingly in such a way that the required minimum width of the escape routes is not restricted.

In the case of buildings that do not fall within the scope of the Workplace Ordinance and for which there are no comparable specifications on the required escape route widths, the escape route dimensions of ASR A2.3 are occasionally used as an alternative, provided that this is not contradicted by an applicable special building regulation with its own specifications, e.g. a school building or assembly area ordinance.
