Blind floor

In the previously common construction method of wooden beam ceilings, planks that formed the walkable floor covering were nailed directly to the beam layer. This type of ceiling offered almost no sound or heat insulation and was set into strong vibrations when walked on. As an improvement measure, battens were attached to the beams, which served as a support for an intermediate floor, the so-called blind floor. A mixture of sand, clay or slag was filled into the resulting cavity between the blind floor and the walkable floor covering.

Notes on planning

Today, blind floors usually consist of OSB or chipboard or dry screed elements instead of planking. Almost any floor covering can be laid on these blind floors.

Another variant of the blind floor is the sprung floor. Sprung floors are mainly used in buildings in solid construction and in sports hall construction. In this case, the girders, usually provided with an elastic support, are laid out on the concrete ceiling and levelled. The blind floor is then attached to this at a 90° offset from the direction in which the beam is laid.
