Movement joints in waterproofing

A distinction is made between

  • joint type I: joints for slow-moving and one-off/infrequent movements such as settlement movements or size changes as a result of seasonal temperature fluctuations on thermally insulated roof surfaces on the upper side. The movements of the joint flanks must not exceed certain movement dimensions specified in the respective regulations.
  • Joint type II: Joints for fast-moving or frequently repeated movements such as size changes as a result of temperature fluctuations during the day, e.g. in the case of roof surfaces that are not insulated on the upper side.

Measures for joint formation can be found in the respective regulations (for the waterproofing of buildings, the parts of DIN 18531, 18532 or 18533 applicable to the respective area of application, in the case of flat roofs in each case in conjunction with the Flat Roof Directive).
