Reinforcement is usually installed as pre-corroded steel. However, it is important to ensure that it is completely embedded in the concrete and sufficiently covered in accordance with the regulations of DIN EN 1992-1-1 and DIN EN 1992-1-1/NA . This is because the alkaline environment of the concrete prevents corrosion of the reinforcement in the absence of water and air.
The concrete cover also ensures the fire protection requirements of the reinforced concrete component. Since steel fails under the influence of high temperatures, the durability of the component in the event of a fire can be controlled by covering it with concrete. Usual concrete overlays are between 3 and 5 centimetres and are determined by the structural engineer.
