Edge plank

The edge plank is used for flat roofs as well as for pitched and monopitch roofs.

In the case of flat roofs, it is usually mounted on the (concrete) parapet upstand and serves to fasten the parapet cover plate above. In the case of pitched and monopitch roofs, the edge plank serves as a lateral closure (verge, ridge, eaves) and is designed as a support for the roof edge or gutter.

In timber construction, a plank is generally an elongated sawn timber with a flat cross-section. Colloquially, however, planks or, in connection with the edge plank, laminate boards are also referred to as planks. The following standard formats apply for correct classification:

  • According to DIN 68252 (sawn timber in general), the plank has a thickness of at least 40 mm and a width of at least twice the thickness.
  •  In deviation from this, the DIN 4074 standard (construction sawn timber), which applies to the construction industry, defines the width as at least three times the thickness.
  •  In Austria, posts are pieces of wood with a rectangular cross-section, thicker than a board (according to the standard, which in Austria is a maximum of 35 mm thick). By definition, a post has a thickness of at least 40 mm and a maximum of 100 mm rough-sawn with a width of ≥18 cm. Planed posts can also be as thin as 35 mm.
