Sand-lime brick walls, sound insulation

Sand-lime brick walls offer very good conditions in terms of sound insulation. The sound transmission, even through longitudinal conduction of adjacent apartments, is very low due to the high weight of the stone material, so that very good sound insulation values are achieved. The specific quality of the wall can be controlled by choosing the bulk density. However, apartment partitions should always be integrated into the outer wall.

Sound insulation values as minimum requirements are specified in DIN 4109, Supplement 2, and for apartments also in VDI 4100. However, the Federal Court of Justice has ruled in several judgments, most recently in 2012, that DIN 4109 is not a recognised rule of technology for the production of sound insulation in apartments that meets the usual quality and comfort standards. Planners are therefore required to propose better acoustic solutions to the client.

For this purpose, the working aids of the German Society for Acoustics (DEGA) can be consulted, which has published the leaflet ► DEGA Recommendation 103, Noise Protection in Residential Construction – Noise Protection Certificate , which deals with a multi-stage system for the differentiated planning and labelling of structural sound insulation between room situations, regardless of the type of building, on the basis of which comprehensive and high-quality advice was carried out . The system can also be used to derive a sound insulation certificate, which can be created on the website using a free Excel tool.

Many manufacturers also offer free sound insulation calculators for the uncomplicated consideration of individual components, e.g. partition walls, taking into account the flanking components, e.g. the ► Bundesverband Kalksandsteinindustrie e.V.
