Counter battens

A counter batten is a substructure that is applied transversely to the main or support surface. It reduces the grid for the application of roof covering or façade material and serves as a support for them.

More about counter battens

The counter battens are nailed or screwed at right angles to the support rail above. The counter battens are used to compensate for unevenness or to gain space for thermal insulation or electrical installation. In the case of a rear-ventilated façade (analogous to the roof construction), a counter batten ensures sufficient air supply.

Drywall construction is also referred to as counter-battens in the substructure of suspended ceilings.

A counter batten on the roof runs from roof ridge to eaves across the battens. The battens are attached to the rafters. The roof battens that support the roof covering are in turn nailed across the counter battens.

Counter battens are also used for the installation of wood panelling.

Notes on planning

Wood swells and shrinks. As a result, it can happen that the primary construction rotates or twists. An appropriate substructure in the form of a counter batten can minimise stresses. This can prevent wooden cladding or panelling from being damaged by these forces.
