Glazed ceramic tiles and slabs are tested for their abrasion resistance using standardised test methods and assigned to one of 5 abrasion classes in accordance with DIN EN ISO 10545-7. Abrasion classes 1 and 2 then classify products with high surface wear that can only be used as wall coverings. Ceramic products with abrasion class 3 offer a certain resistance to surface wear, which is sufficient for floor coverings in private homes, for example. Abrasion class 4 meets increased requirements, e.g. for floor coverings in house entrances or in public buildings, while the highest abrasion class 5 also ensures sufficient abrasion resistance, e.g. for floor coverings in garages.
