Rear-ventilated constructions and multi-skin exterior wall constructions with rear ventilation are also referred to as cold façades in terms of building physics.
Rear ventilation thermally decouples the outer layer (weather protection) from the primary structure (supporting structure), while the outer layer remains "cold". The heat-insulating function is usually taken over by the insulation level, e.g. in the case of highly thermally insulating perforated bricks, only by the construction layer.
