Snow guard

Snow guard systems are roof structures that hold the snow cover that forms on the roof and are thus intended to prevent the release of roof avalanches. They are usually used at the edge of the roof.

More about snow guard systems

The following are used:

  • Snow fences
  • Snow guard beams (mainly logs)
  • Snow guard pipes

In addition, snow guard hooks can be distributed over the entire roof surface. These also hold the snow cover and thus relieve the primary snow guard system at the edge of the roof.

The primary snow guard system must be able to withstand the snow load in terms of design, material and substructure.

The

expected snow load for Germany can be determined by means of the snow load zones. See: Rules of the roofing trade (ZDVH rules) and DIN EN 1991-1-3 Eurocode 1: Effects on structures – Part 1-3: General effects, snow loads

There is not a general obligation to secure the roof against roof avalanches everywhere in Germany. This topic is regulated differently in the state building codes.

In municipal areas, there may also be an obligation to install snow guard systems or warnings of roof avalanches due to corresponding regulatory regulations.

A roof pitch of more than 45° can also lead to an obligation to protect against roof avalanches.
